P. Kunhiraman Nair: A Poet of Nature and Symbolism




P. Kunhiraman Nair, also known as Mahakavi P, was one of the most prominent poets of Malayalam literature. He was born on October 4, 1905, in Bellikoth, Kanhangad, in the present-day Kasaragod district of Kerala. He was a teacher, journalist, and a wanderer who explored the natural beauty and cultural diversity of his home state. He wrote more than 60 works in various genres, such as poetry, drama, biography, essay, autobiography, and children's literature. He received many awards and honors for his literary contributions, including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry in 1959 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967.


P. Kunhiraman Nair's poems are known for their lyrical expression, romantic imagery, and symbolic meaning. He was influenced by the Vedanta philosophy, the Bhakti movement, and the modernist trends in Malayalam poetry. Some of his famous poetic works are Kavitha (Poem), Kaliyachan (The Priest of Kali), Thamarathoni (The Lotus Boat), Nirapara (The Measure), Karutha Pakshiyude Paattu (The Song of the Black Bird), Kurukshethram (The Battlefield), Muthassi (Grandmother), Krishnapaksham (The Dark Fortnight), and Nithyakanyaka (The Eternal Virgin). He also wrote some autobiographical works, such as Kaviyude Kalpadukal (The Footprints of the Poet), Enne Thirayunna Njan (I Who Seek Myself), and Nithyakanyakayethedi (In Search of the Eternal Virgin).
